With MyHeritage you can produce a number of useful charts and family books to help with your research, use them as offline reference/backup or print them out to give to family as gifts. These are great tools to help to get others to contribute missing information.

During our February MyHeritage SIG meeting member Larry Olson shared a number of Smart and Record matches from his family tree. We navigated through the MyHeritage site reviewing sources, information and the verification process. Larry also shared a number of helpful tips using City Directories and Public Records and then extracted the information into his tree. He then demonstrated how to use the records to easily find names of nearby neighbors.

Our January My Heritage SIG meeting was an exciting hands-on start to reviewing the process of accepting and rejecting various record and smart matches for our Family Trees. Using actual matches from member Mary Hoyer’s tree we explored the pitfalls of blindly accepting suggested matches and the importance of verifying information before confirming – even if many people have already accepted “unverified” information.

During our third meeting, we discussed the various matches and searches available through MyHeritage – people matches, source matches, smart matches, discoveries, etc. We used actual examples from our member’s trees to delve deep into our research and discussed the confirmation process. Using our “hands-on – show me” method makes it easy for members to ask questions, follow various links and discuss whether the matches are accurate. Today’s meeting was a fun learning experience.

Our second MyHeritage SIG meeting, attended by about 20 members, was an exciting member discussion and tip exchange covering some of the basics of setting up our family trees on our MyHeritage websites. We toured the many privacy, site settings and display preferences and options that are available through MyHeritage.
While viewing and discussing family trees we were able to explore the benefits of displaying our trees in the Family View, the Pedigree View, and the Fan View. Each option revealed ways to determine missing info in our trees. Member questions gave us a “hands-on” opportunity to search for answers – a great learning experience!

Zoom participants shared their subscriptions with My Heritage and there was a mix of some members having from no subscriptions to Premium versions. Not surprisingly participants are looking for help for various reasons specific to their tree. Others have little experience and have historically used other genealogy sites such as Ancestry with the idea of using My Heritage to supplement their search efforts. Generally, DNA at My Heritage seemed a popular topic. There was a general tour of My Heritage site and more specifically Ken’s family tree. Ken offered various sections of his tree which offered participant’s ideas on how they could create a tree. One of the topics proposed for future SIG meetings was a “Back to Basics” for My Heritage. Ken provided the location for tutorials on the My Heritage website. Clearly, there was a broad cross-section of skillsets by those participating.
