Job Description: Publicity Chairman

Works collaboratively with: Society President, Webmaster, Newsletter Editor, and Program Chair
Commitment: approximately 4 to 6 hours per month (virtual)

Position Summary

The Publicity Chairman is a member of the NWSGS Board who supports the society’s mission by promoting meetings, programs, and events to a wider audience. This role focuses on clear, consistent digital outreach that helps members and guests discover what NWSGS has to offer.

This is a volunteer leadership role with shared responsibility and strong collaboration across the board.

Key Responsibilities

Planning & Coordination

  • Coordinate with the Program Chair to plan promotion timelines for monthly meetings and special events.
  • Align publicity efforts with the society’s overall calendar and messaging.
  • Maintain consistency across platforms and announcements.

Execution & Ongoing Support

  • Create and distribute digital announcements for Zoom-based meetings and workshops.
  • Maintain listings on platforms such as ConferenceKeepers and Facebook Events.
  • Draft brief community notices or calendar items for local media and partner organizations.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with the Webmaster and Newsletter Editor to ensure consistent messaging.
  • Share outreach materials with libraries, historical societies, and partner groups.
  • Provide brief updates during monthly board meetings on publicity efforts and upcoming plans.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Communication: Comfortable writing short, engaging descriptions for events and posts.
  • Organization: Able to manage timelines and recurring tasks.
  • Comfort with Digital Tools: Familiar with Facebook and basic online tools; willing to learn others.
  • Collaboration: Enjoys working with others to support shared goals.
  • Interest in Genealogy: Helpful, but not required.
